This poor widow has given more than all the others making contributions.

Day 3: Tuesday of Controversy

The Widow Who Gave Two Coins—When God sees the heart (Mark 12:41-44)

Mark 12:43–44 NLT
43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

During those days in Jerusalem, Jesus spent much time teaching in the temple. Crowds came to hear him, and among the many things that happened there was the moment when people deposited their offerings.

In the temple, there were special chests called the "offering chest" where worshippers placed their contributions. Many of the donations were made with coins, so the sound of the coins falling could easily attract the attention of those around them.

In the midst of that atmosphere, some people deposited large amounts. Imagine the sound. But Jesus wasn't impressed by the sound of the coins; he was looking at their hearts. Then a widow appeared.

In first-century culture, widows represented one of the most vulnerable groups in society. They often lacked economic protection and stability. However, this woman approached silently and placed two small coins, known as "leptons," the smallest denomination of Jewish currency.

To anyone else, that offering seemed insignificant.

But Jesus did something amazing: He paused and called His disciples to teach them a lesson that still speaks to our hearts today. Mark 12:44 NLT “For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

Jesus revealed a profound truth about how God sees our lives. While the world measures by quantity, God measures by surrender.

That woman didn't just give an offering. She gave her trust in God. And that trust transformed the small into something extraordinary. The Bible reminds us of this same truth in:

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 NLT

In a world that constantly compares, measures, and calculates, Jesus reminds us that heaven pays attention to very different things.

Because when the heart is completely surrendered to God, even the smallest things can have eternal value. While many were looking at the large offerings, Jesus was looking at something almost no one saw. For God, surrender is not measured by quantity, but by the heart.

“God doesn’t count quantities. God weighs hearts.”

Jesus doesn’t just see what we do. Jesus sees the heart with which we do it.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
Worship is not always expressed in great or visible things. Often, it is expressed in simple acts: Time dedicated to God. Service to others. Silent generosity. Daily obedience.

When something is offered with faith, even the small can have eternal value.

Reflection questions: Why did Jesus consider that the widow gave more than everyone else? What does this story teach us about trusting in God? Is there anything in my life that I need to surrender to God with greater faith?

PRAYER:
Lord, teach me to trust in You as this widow did. Help me to give You not from my leftovers, but from the very best that You have given to my life. May every decision, every resource, and every moment I have be an expression of trust in You. In Jesus name. Amen.

Take a few minutes to think about this and right your reflections in a notebook or in your notes app.
