Day 5: Thursday of Intimacy

John, the Beloved Disciple—When intimacy changes perspective (John 13:21-26)

John 13:23 NIV
One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

The night before the crucifixion was one of the most intense in the lives of Jesus and his disciples. That night they were celebrating Passover together, the festival that commemorated how God had freed Israel from slavery in Egypt.

But this time the meal had an even deeper meaning.

Jesus knew his hour had come. Very soon he would face the cross. However, in the midst of that solemn moment, something extraordinary happened: Jesus not only shared a meal with his disciples, but he also washed their feet, showing them that true leadership in the kingdom of God is expressed through service.

While all this was happening, the disciples tried to understand what Jesus was saying. The words about betrayal, surrender, and suffering generated confusion and concern.

In the midst of that uncertainty, the Gospel shows us a very significant scene.

“The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table.” John 13:23 NLT

In the culture of that time, during formal meals people reclined around the table.

Reclining close to someone's chest was a sign of closeness and trust.

John didn't understand everything that was happening. But he had something many forget to cultivate: intimacy with Jesus.

While others argued and tried to decipher every detail, John was close to the heart of Christ. And that closeness changes the way we face life.

Because when we walk close to Jesus, even seasons of uncertainty are experienced differently.

Peace doesn't come from having all the answers; it comes from knowing who we are close to. That's why Jesus himself would later say to his disciples:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 NIV

Those who live close to the heart of Jesus find peace even when they don't understand everything.

When the heart learns to remain close to Jesus, even the most difficult moments are seen from a different perspective. Because intimacy with Christ transforms our way of seeing life.

“Intimacy with Jesus transforms the way we see life.”

While some were trying to understand what was happening, John simply remained close to the heart of Jesus.

Jesus doesn't just want to be admired from afar. Jesus wants to be known up close.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
Cultivating intimacy with Christ involves: Time in prayer. Reading the Word. Moments of silence with God. A constant relationship with Him.

Reflection questions: What does it mean today to live close to the heart of Jesus? What things can distract us from cultivating that relationship? How would our lives change if we walked more closely with Christ?

PRAYER:
Lord, teach me to walk closely with you. Help me to seek your presence each day and to find in you the peace my heart needs. May my relationship with you be the most important thing in my life. Amen.

Take a few minutes to think about this and right your reflections in a notebook or in your notes app.
