Today you will be with me in paradise.
Day 6: Good Friday
The Thief on the Cross—When grace achieves the impossible (Luke 23:32-43)
Luke 23:42–43 NLT
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Good Friday brings us to the most solemn moment in all of history: the cross.
After being arrested, unjustly tried, and flogged, Jesus was taken to the place called Golgotha, which means “place of the skull.” There he was crucified—a form of execution used by the Roman Empire to punish criminals and rebels.
The cross was not only an instrument of death; it was also a symbol of public humiliation. Jesus was crucified between two guilty men.
The Gospel of Luke tells us that both were condemned criminals. One of them mocked Jesus, repeating the same mocking tone heard among some of those present. But the other man saw something different.
In the midst of the pain, the blood, and the rejection, that man recognized something that many had not understood. Jesus was King. Then he uttered a brief but profoundly sincere prayer:
“Then he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.'” Luke 23:42 NLT
He didn't ask for a second chance at life. He didn't ask to escape the cross. He only asked to be remembered. And Jesus' response reveals the heart of the gospel.
“And Jesus replied, 'I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.'” Lucas 23:43
At that moment, something extraordinary happened.
A man with a past full of mistakes, with no time to change his story, no works to show, no merits to present, received the promise of eternal life.
Because salvation has never been a reward for the perfect. It is a gift of grace for those who trust in Christ. The Bible expresses it clearly:
“8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8–9 NLT
The cross reminds us of a life-transforming truth: God's grace is always greater than our past. Where sin seems to have the last word, God's grace writes a new story.
And that is why the message of the cross remains a source of hope for everyone. Because it is never too late for grace.
“A moment of faith can change eternity.”
While many saw a man dying on a cross, that thief saw the eternal King who had come to save him.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
God's grace reminds us that: No one is too far away to be reached. No past is too dark to be forgiven. There is always hope in Christ.
Reflection questions: What did this man see in Jesus that others didn't? What does this story teach us about God's grace? How does our life change when we understand that we were saved by grace?
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank you for your undeserved grace. Thank you that even when we didn't deserve it, you offered us forgiveness and hope. Help me to live each day remembering that my salvation is a gift of your love. Amen.
Take a few minutes to think about this and right your reflections in a notebook or in your notes app.
