Didn’t our hearts burn within us?

Day 8: Resurrection Sunday

The Walkers to Emmaus—When the heart starts burning again (Luke 24:13-16; 28-34)

Luke 24:32 NLT
They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”

The morning of the resurrection had begun with astonishing news: the tomb was empty. Some women had seen angels and heard the announcement that Jesus had risen.

But not all the disciples yet understood what was happening. That same day, two of them were walking toward a small village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along the road, they talked to each other about everything that had happened in the last few days.

The cross still weighed heavily on their hearts. Sadness, confusion, and disillusionment filled their thoughts. Everything they had hoped for seemed to have ended on Friday. But in the middle of that journey, something extraordinary happened. Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them.

However, the Gospel tells us that their eyes were veiled, and they did not recognize him. Even so, as they walked, Jesus began to explain the Scriptures to them and show how everything that had happened was part of God's plan.

From Moses and the prophets, he revealed to them how the Scriptures spoke of the Messiah who had to suffer and then enter into his glory.

“Then Jesus took them through the
writings of Moses and all the prophets,
explaining from all the Scriptures
the things concerning himself.”
Luke 24:27 NLT

As they listened, something began to happen within them. Sadness began to transform into hope. Confusion began to give way to faith. And later, recalling that moment, they said to each other:

“They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32 NLT

When Christ opens the Scriptures, something profound happens in the human heart; the heart is rekindled.

Faith awakens. Hope is revived. The heart burns anew.

Because the resurrection not only changed history, it also transforms the hearts of those who walk with Jesus.

Many times we think we are alone on our paths of sadness or confusion. But the story of Emmaus reminds us of something beautiful:

“Jesus is often closer than we feel.”

During that week, many thought they had lost Jesus. But on Sunday they discovered something that would change the world forever: Jesus was not dead. Jesus was alive.

And as they walked with Him, their hearts burned anew.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:
The resurrection reminds us that: Hope always triumphs over discouragement. Life triumphs over death. Christ continues to walk with us today.

Reflection questions: Why didn't the disciples recognize Jesus at first? How can Jesus be walking with us without us noticing? What things make our hearts burn for God again?

PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank you for rising from the dead and giving us eternal hope. Help me to recognize your presence in my life and to walk with you each day. May my heart always burn with desire when I hear your word. Amen.

Take a few minutes to think about this and right your reflections in a notebook or in your notes app.
