Day 7: Communion With The Spirit

WEDNESDAY | AUGUST 20

2 Corinthians 13:14 NLT

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

When Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis, it broke the communion humanity was created to have with God's presence. As a result, in the Old Testament, God demonstrated His powerful presence at specific times.

In Exodus 3, God's presence appears to Moses from a burning bush. Later, God's presence arrives at Mount Sinai with thunder, lightning, and fire, and God gives Moses the Ten Commandments. God's presence guides the Israelites like a pillar of cloud and fire in the wilderness. In 1 Kings 18, we see Elijah build an altar and pray for fire from heaven, and God's presence consumes that altar.

Now in Acts 2, we find this group of 120 individuals gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on each of them. What does this mean?

The same presence that Moses experienced on Mount Sinai. The same presence that guided them in the desert with a great pillar of fire. That same fire that Elijah called down from heaven. That same presence and that same fire now comes to take up residence in the new temple that is the people of God. The presence of God comes to rest upon us as temples of God (1 Corinthians 6:19).

Yes, the Holy Spirit now takes up residence in us, but the question here is: are we having a relationship with Him? There are many to whom the Holy Spirit is speaking. Perhaps you feel a conviction about something in your heart. Perhaps you feel He is leading you in a certain direction, but many times we ignore it and have no relationship with the Holy Spirit.

It would be like having a friend living in your house, but you never listen to them, never talk to them, never seek their advice. Yes, the power resides in you. Dunamis is in you, but you must cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit who gives that power.

The Holy Spirit is not a feeling. He is a person who desires a relationship with you. Being in daily communion with the Holy Spirit means seeking His voice and allowing Him to transform our thoughts, our words, and our actions.

But for this to happen, we cannot simply seek the Spirit of God at an altar in church. Yes, these are beautiful special visitations that minister to us, but it is a visitation—it does not imply communion. Communion with the Holy Spirit cannot be cultivated solely at the altar in church. It is a daily posture of an open heart to His presence wherever you are.

Invite the Holy Spirit into every part of your life. When we live in communion with the Holy Spirit, we not only survive—we thrive in the fullness of God's presence.

REFLECT: What does it mean to have communion with the Holy Spirit? Do you have a daily relationship with the Holy Spirit? How can you invite the Holy Spirit into the different parts of your daily life? What steps can you take to grow in your awareness of the Spirit’s presence in your daily life?

PRAY: Pray that you become more aware of the Holy Spirit in your daily life so you can develop a greater relationship with the presence of God.

Take a few minutes to think about this and write your thoughts down in a notebook or notes app.
